These guidelines support editors and authors of La Trobe eBureau open educational resources (OER) to develop content in a learner-centred way. They are used together with the corresponding OER chapter template.

The underlying principles informing the design of these guidelines are:

open textbooks should differ from traditional textbooks in pedagogy, not just accessibility

our OERs express concepts and practice in a way that speaks to the “hearts and minds” of learners

the goal is to develop emerging practitioners or critical thinkers, rather than just provide open access information

context is key - communicating facts and concepts alone is of limited value in a rapidly changing world

effective learning and development is deeply human, developmental, and contextual

We encourage you to adapt these guidelines for your own OER project or open education program.
