Submission note: A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to the Rural Health School, Faculty of Health Sciences, La Trobe University, Bendigo. Bendigo.
Singing is a very popular activity, particularly in the United States, where it is reported that more people are involved in singing than any other recreational pursuit (Bell, 2004). In Australia, statistics show that singing is a very popular arts activity in the state of Victoria, with 16.9% of people taking part. This is ahead of the other activities surveyed which were music, performance, writing, painting and drawing, and is only exceeded in popularity by crafts. Rural and regional areas of central Victoria (Bendigo and Ballarat regions) reported one of the highest participation rates for singing in the state; between 20.51 and 24.16% exceeding most metropolitan areas (Wiseman and Brasher, 2007). In Victoria, there are 750 choirs registered with Community Music Victoria (CMV), but Executive Officer, Jon Hawkes believes there are many more active groups than are registered (personal communication 16 June, 2008).
