‘The Lucky Ones’? Overseas born Tongan youth in Tongan high schools
reportposted on 2020-11-04, 03:36 authored by H Lee
This project investigated the experiences of students in Tongan high schools who have spent most of their childhoods living outside Tonga, as the children of Tongan migrants. They are referred to in this report as ‘overseas born’ students to distinguish them from students who were born and raised in Tonga. Many of these overseas born students are sent by their parents to attend school in Tonga because of concerns about their behaviour; spending time in Tonga is seen as a way to ‘straighten them up’ and help them ‘learn the culture’.
