The potential and realised mating system of Sagittaria platyphylla

In addition to asexual reproduction, Sagittaria platyphylla (Engelmann) J.G. Smith has a number of sexual strategies that promote reproductive assurance. These include attracting a wide suite of floral visitors, a prolonged flowering season, overlap of male and female flowering phases within individual inflorescences and among plants within a population, incomplete self‐incompatibility and avoidance of pollen limitation through extra‐gynoecial pollen tube growth. Reproduction remains a critical point in the life‐cycle of the plant that should be specifically targeted by management strategies to reduce the prolific production of seed.
