The Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre’s Response to the inquiry into the prevalence, causes and impacts of loneliness in New South Wales

Download (331.7 kB)

La Trobe University’s Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC) highlights the heightened risk of loneliness among Autistic people and its negative impact on their mental and physical health in this submission to the New South Wales inquiry on loneliness. It emphasises that social isolation and loneliness disproportionately affect Autistic individuals due to challenges like social stigma, discrimination, and fewer support networks. These factors contribute to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation among Autistic people. OTARC’s recommendations include :

  • Developing a comprehensive mental health strategy to support Autistic people across their lifespan.
  • Co-producing mental health policies with Autistic voices.
  • Improving training for healthcare and education providers to enhance support for Autistic individuals.
  • Public campaigns to dispel myths about Autism and foster social inclusion.
  • Targeted funding for initiatives that address loneliness in Autistic communities.
