Project Number: Effects of water level fluctuations in experimental billabongs, permanent and ephemeral - M/03/5105; LWRRDC R&D Project MDR11.
MDFRC item.
9 pages.
Sixteen artificial billabongs were constructed to permit experiments designed to test the hypothesis that a change in the temporal patterns of inundation affected invertebrate fauna. Results indicate that the response of invertebrate communities to flooding is not effected by the season in which flooding occurs nor are they effected by the duration of the flood. There was, however, a significant effect of flooding on macrophyte assemblages and diversity. Interaction between planktivorous fish and large mobile invertebrate predators appears to cause some displacement of taxa.
