Seasonal drainage problems in the Long Plain Creek Catchment were identified by the West Hume Land Care Group as a significant problem affecting the productivity of land owned by more than 20 landowners in their group. Efforts to alleviate the problem were begun in 1990 when the group obtained funding from the Hume Shire to commission a drainage feasibility report. This recommended that some relief to the drainage problem could be achieved by undertaking engineering works on the Carroll's Lane Drain (Brett 1994) The Carroll's Lane drain had been excavated in 1935-36, using horse teams and scoops, to alleviate drainage problems in the catchment by diverting discharge from the creek to the Murray River. However, the work was not effective as the channel bed was not fully taken to base level (Brett 1994) . Funds from NRMS were obtained in 1992 to rectify the problems in the channel bed and for control structures on the floodplain. Water quality issues were raised in obtaining various council approvals.
