The P speciation of sediments taken from a range of aquatic systems was determined by a modified version of the SEDEX sequential extraction procedure (Ruttenberg, 1992). Cluster analysis of the data suggested that there was a partial decoupling of the P speciation from the inorganic composition of the sediment. Correlation analysis and P-31 n.m.r. spectroscopy were used in an attempt to resolve the chemical nature of the extracted P species.
