This article is adapted from a talk presented by editorial board member Jeffrey Garrett at the Toronto launch of The Looking Glass on April 2, 1997. As former Head of the English Language Section of the International Youth Library in Munich, and past editor of Bookbird: World of Children's Books, Jeffrey brings a sharp eye and a surprising thesis to the subject of children's book translation. In particular, he highlights the double issue, in translating Carroll's "Jabberwocky" (and the rest of Alice's adventures), of not only taking the nonsense words into another language's poetic forms, but also the sly jokes into another culture's sense of humour.
