Lapithos, Cyprus. Excavations by Myres 1913 and Markides 1917. Finds, plans, archival records

Open-access Lapithos data for the volume on the first Lapithos material is available under 'Files' (above) within the (downloadable zip) files beginning: Download Lapithos -- 1917 -- Tomb X (X = 1-17, 04bis).


John L. Myres and Leonard H.D. Buxton (Oxford University) excavated 60 Early and Middle Bronze Age tombs at Lapithos, on the north coast of Cyprus, for the Cyprus Museum in 1913. Menelaos Markides (Cyprus Museum) excavated another 18 tombs at the same site in 1917. Neither excavation was fully published. In total the finds (pottery, metal, terracotta) number approximately 3000 objects, housed in the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia.


The data lodged in July 2017 consist of the following: 1. A full digital record of the archival material relating to the excavation at Lapithos of 1913 Tombs 1 to 9 (by Myres and Buxton) and 1917 Tombs 1 to 9 (by Markides). This includes the field notebook and summary report records and inventory list for each tomb, the field plans and, in the case of the 1913 tombs, sketch drawings of the pottery and metal finds. 2. Colour photographs and formal line drawings of the ceramic, metal and other finds from 1913 Tombs 1 to 9 and 1917 Tombs 1 to 9 documented in the Cyprus Museum in 2016 and 2017. 3. A database containing a full description of all finds from 1913 Tombs 1 to 9 (excavated by Myres and Buxton) and 1917 Tombs 1 to 9 (excavated by Markides) documented in the Cyprus Museum in 2016 and 2017.

A full digital record of the archival material relating to the excavation at Lapithos of 1913 Tombs 10 to 17 (by Myres and Buxton) and 1917 Tombs 10 to 17 (by Markides). Colour photographs and formal line drawings of the ceramic, metal and other finds from 1913 Tombs 18 to 47 documented in the Cyprus Museum in 2018 and 2019.
