This booklet has been designed to support you to more confidently teach Australia’s deep time histories of people and Country. In the booklet, you will find a range of core foundational knowledge linked to archaeology and palaeoecology, including artefact analysis, dating techniques, principles of stratigraphy, and collaborative archaeological practice. The booklet also provides explicit instructions on running the Deep Time Detectives program, with options for formative and summative assessments with worked examples included. You will also find detailed summaries of current archaeological and palaeoecological research relating to each of the four time periods to help you frame classroom discussions and support student learning.

If you have trouble printing the complete booklet, please print the version with the appendices removed. The appendices showing the worked examples of the recording forms and interpretation report are available separately in this collection.

While we have designed these resources around the Australian Curriculum (2022) Year 7 History unit ‘deep time history of Australia’, they are also relevant to many science and geography units from Year 4 to Year 10. Deep Time Detectives is also well suited to support the teaching and learning of the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.
