ABSTRACT: Purpose: The purpose of this review was to explore the literature relating to the advantages, disadvantages and potential outcomes in students partaking in an internship program, as an alternative to securing an external field placement. Method: An exploratory scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) scoping review method to source key literature and other references. Results: A total of 872 articles were initially identified and eight of these were relevant to the topic. These articles were categorised into six key themes which could be utilised for considering current internship programs and for future studies. Discussion & Conclusion: The overall findings suggest that the benefits of internships outweigh the drawbacks. Internships have demonstrated positive effects on enhancing undergraduate students' technical skills, personal attributes and professional development which increases student employability and assists students to achieve a smooth workforce transition.
